Some characteristics of optical breakdown plasmas in potassium vapor
Description
Numerical calculations and experimental results are presented from a study of optical breakdown plasmas in potassium vapor with densities of NO = (0.2-2) x 1016 cm-3 produced by laser radiation with a power density of I ≤1011 W x cm-2, γ = 1.06μm, and τ = 15 ns. Data on the refraction and scattering of laser light by the plasma show that an extended (∼ 25 cm) fully ionized plasma with a diameter of ∼ 300μn may be formed. The use of such plasmas in plasma accelerator schemes appears promising. 10 refs., 8 figs
