Life span of pressurized water reactors
Description
The important place that PWR nuclear power stations have taken in the EDF's overall production facilities justifies a special effort being made to assess their working life. It would appear that a PWR needs better technical and economic conditions during its lifetime than the old thermal stations. The EDF ''lifetime project'' comprises a 4 year work schedule. First there will be a full inventory of the available data to assess the ageing process of the sensitive material in a power station and follow its evolution in order to forecast or correct it. The sensitive materials are those for which the difficulty and cost of reprocessing or replacement exclude these operations from the standard maintenance programmes. An initial analysis of the ways in which these materials can be damaged leads to the conclusion that the major causes of ageing, which are a priori brittleness in the reactor vessels due to irradiation and metal fatigue in the main boiler components, will not limit the life of these sensitive materials, perhaps only in the very long term. It cannot be denied that overcoming certain damage due to material ageing or corrosion poses difficult maintenance problems which it is important to the able to forecast and measure. Abstract (French)
L'importance qu'ont prise les centrales nucleaires REP dans l'ensemble des moyens de production d'EDF justifie qu'un effort particulier soit consacre a l'appreciation de leur duree de vie. La longevite des REP semble devoir beneficier de conditions techniques et economiques plus favorables que les equipements thermiques anterieurs. Le ''projet duree de vie'' d'EDF comporte un programme de travail de 4 ans. Il y sera procede d'abord a un inventaire complet des donnees disponibles pour prevoir le vieillissement des materiels sensibles d'une centrale, en suivre l'evolution pour la prevenir ou pour y remedier. Ces materiels sensibles sont ceux dont les difficultes et les couts de remise en etat ou de remplacement ne permettraient pas d'inclure ces operations dans le cadre normal des programmes de maintenance. Une premiere analyse des modes d'endommagement de ces materiels autorise a penser que les causes majeures de vieillissement que representent a priori la fragilisation sous irradiation des cuves et la fatigue des composants principaux des chaudieres ne limiteront pas la vie de ces materiels sensibles, sinon a tres long terme. Il n'est pas exclu que la maitrise de certains dommages de vieillissement ou de corrosion de materiaux pose a la maintenance des problemes difficiles, qu'il importe de prevoir et de mesurer.
