Giant atoms
Description
The instable Rydberg state is defined as a state intermediate between the moderately excited state and the ionized state (photoionization) in the framework of a planetary atomic model representing various excitation processes involving the valence electron. The absorption of a photon with an energy slightly below the ionization energy takes the valence electron up to a Rydberg state corresponding to a very large orbit around the atomic core. These giant atoms highly sensitive to outer perturbations, are easily destroyed; their ability to emit radio waves allow them to be observed outside the interstellar space. Some transitions involving orbits of order n = 300, corresponding to atoms of 2μm in diameter, have been detected. In the laboratory, the combination of laser excitation and electric detection made it possible to prepare and study atoms with n up to 100. The species more frequently investigated are alkali metals (Na, Rb, Cs) rare gases (He, Xe ...) alkaline earths (Ba, Ca ...) and the uranium atom of possible economic interest in view of isotope separation
Abstract (French)
Dans le cadre d'un modele planetaire de l'atome symbolisant divers processus d'excitation affectant un electron de valence, on definit l'etat instable de Rydberg comme un etat intermediaire entre l'etat moderement excite et l'etat ionise (photoionisation). L'absorption d'un photon d'energie tres legerement inferieure a l'energie d'ionisation porte l'electron de valence dans un etat de Rydberg correspondant a une orbite de tres grande dimension autour du coeur de l'atome. Tres sensible aux perturbations exterieures ces atomes geants sont facilement detruits, leur aptitude a emettre des ondes radio les a fait observer dans l'espace interstellaire. On a pu detecter des transitions impliquant des orbites n de l'ordre de 300 correspondant a des atomes de 2 microns de diametre. Au laboratoire la combinaison de l'excitation laser et de la detection electrique a permis de preparer et d'etudier des atomes juqu'a n de l'ordre de 100. Les varietes les plus etudiees sont les alcalins (sodium, rubidium, cesium), les gaz rares, (helium, xenon, etc...), les alcalinoterreux (Ba, Ca ...) et l'atome d'uranium dont l'etude peut avoir un interet economique pour la separation isotopiqueAdditional details
