High-strength low-temperature bonding of beryllium and other metals
Description
is protective at temperatures up to 700 deg C; at 750 deg C, however, breakaway occurs. If the CO/sub 2/ is admitted to the preheated sample, the reaction is very rapid at first and most of the carbon is deposited over this initial period. In CO, the oxidation is non- protective above 550 deg C, while in CO--CO/sub 2/ mixtures containing up to 7.5% CO, the kinetics are the same as in CO/sub 2/ alone. The kinetics of the reaction of zirconium with CO/sub 2/ was investigated at temperatures of Zr + 2CO/ sub 2/ = ZrO/sub 2/ + 2CO is predominant at all three temperatures, and in each case the rate of reaction first decreases and then increases with time indicating breakway.
