Selective excitation through second-kind collisions in hollow cathode discharges

Description
The object of this paper is the comparative study of the second kind collisions' effects on the selective excitation of atoms and ions in noble gases and metal vapor mixtures in a hollow cathode electric discharge. The behaviour of sputtered metal atoms' spectral line intensities in a noble gas mixture (He - Kr, He - Ne, Ne - Kr, He - Ne - Kr) plasma suggests the essential roles played by the metal ions in the sputtering yield and by the second kind collisions in the metal atoms' ionization.
