X-ray examinations of the mammary glands

In the first part of this report, a survey is given on the development of mammography that covers its entire history including the most recent innovations. The author then proceeds to discuss the problems involved in exposure techniques. Particular account is taken of the quality of rays and available films. The official standards mandated for mammographic units are roughly outlined. Xeroradiography is described by way of comparison with radiograms obtained by means of a film and then judged on a comparative basis. Mammographic units developed by the firms Philips, Picker, Siemens and Thompson-CGR are described as good examples of state-of-the-art equipment. The units are compared to each other. The role of mammographic examinations using a diaphragm is elucidated in a clinical context. The technique is then compared to conventional mammography. (orig.)
