Seals for transport containers of radioactive materials
Description
In the flange of the transport cask for radioactive materials, at least one elasticrubber sealing ring and, parallel to this, a second sealing ring of easily melting metal, e.g. solder or lead, are arranged in grooves. The metal sealings are advantageously placed on the flange as well as on the cover in two opposite grooves. The edges of the grooves for the metal may further be slightly chamfered if they lie on the vertical surfaces of flange and cover in such a way that a gap is formed into which the melting metal will flow. The elastic-rubber sealing in the shape of an o-ring takes over the sealing function in the temperature range up to 3000C, while in fire accidents with higher temperatures, the metal sealing will melt tightly solder the cask. Im Flausch des Transportbehaelters fuer radioaktive Materialien sind mindestens ein gummielastischer Dichtungsring und parallel ein aus leichtschmelzendem Metall, z.B. Lot oder Blei, gefertigter zweiter Dichtungsring in Nuten angeordnet. Die Metalldichtungen sind hierbei in vorteilhafter Weise sowohl am Flausch als auch am Deckel in sich gegenueberliegenden Nuten untergebracht. Die Kanten der Nuten fuer das Metall koennen ausserdem leicht angeschraegt sein, wenn sie an den senkrechten Innenflaechen von Flausch und Deckel liegen, so dass ein Spalt entsteht, in den das schmelzende Metall hineinfliesst. Die gummieladstische Dichtung in Form eines O-Ringes uebernimmt demnach die Dichtfunktionen bis in den Temperaturbereich von 3000C, waehrend bei Feuerunfaellen mit hoeheren Temperaturen die Metalldichtung schmilzt und den Behaelter dicht zuloetet.
