A simple approximate formula for the incoherent scattering cross section of X and γ-rays
Description
An approximate expression for the incoherent (Compton) scattering cross section of X and γ-rays (1 keV-100 MeV) for all the elements between Z=11 and Z=95 is given. It is a simple modification of the Hastings' formula for the Klein-Nishina cross section in order to take into account the electron binding effects. The average deviations from the tabulated data are less than 1.5%. An extension of this result to the three scintillators NaI, CsI and BGO is also given. (orig.)
