Two Uses of Bromine-82 in Underground Hydrodynamics

Description
The measurement of velocities in aquifers in alluvium is of great importance in determining the most significant parameters in underground hydrodynamics. The authors describe the use of radioactive tracers in velocity measurements in aquifers previously studied by refined mechanical methods and methods based on the laws of transitory movement, as formulated by Theis and adapted by de Gelis. These measurements are carried out by injecting Br82 - labelled NH4Br into a piezometer and then surveying the arrival of the activity in a neighbouring shaft. The results obtained provide valuable clarification of the distribution of velocities in an alluvial formation and represent a contribution, based on standard means of detection, to the verification of Theis' law under conditions which depart appreciably from the basic assumptions. Another application of radioactive labelling of water with Br82 which is dealt with in the paper concerns the localization of permeable strata or seams in a geological calcareous marl series, intended to support quay walls in a harbour basin. The tracer, after being forced into the formation by inactive water, was pumped back and then local and overall measurements of activity permitted estimation of the recovered fraction and precise localization of the zones of recharge. In both cases, the radioactive tracers represented the only means at present available for resolving the problems raised. (author)

La mesure des vitesses des nappes dans les alluvions est d'une grande importance pour la determination des parametres les plus significatifs du domaine de l'hydrodynamiqu e souterraine. Les auteurs decrivent l'emploi de traceurs radioactifs dans des mesures de vitesses dans des nappes deja etudiees par des methodes mecaniques fines et des methodes basees sur des lois du mouvement transitoire definies par Their et adaptees par De Gelis. Ces mesures consistent, apres l'injection dans un piezometre de BrNH4 marque par 82Br, a etudier l'arrivee dans un puits voisin. Les resultats obtenus apportent d'interessantes precisions sur la repartition des vitesses dans une formation alluviale et contribuent avec des moyens de detection courants a verifier la loi de Theis dans des conditions s'eloignant sensiblement des hypotheses de base. Une autre application du marquage radioactif de l'eau au moyen de 82Br a trait a la localisation de couches ou joints permeables dans une serie geologique marno-calcaire, destinee a supporter des murs de quai dans un bassin portuaire maritime. Le traceur, une fois force dans la formation par de l'eau inactive, a ete pompe en retour et des mesures locales et globales d'activite ont permis d'estimer la fraction recuperee et de localiser de facon precise les zones de restitution. Dans les deux cas, les traceurs radioactifs representaient le seul moyen actuellement disponible pour resoudre les problemes poses. (author)Abstract (Spanish)
Para determinar los principales parametros de la hidrodinamica subterranea es muy importante medir las velocidades de las capas freaticas en los aluviones. Los autores describen el empleo de indicadores radiactivos para medir las velocidades en capas ya estudiadas por metodos mecanicos y metodos basados en leyes del movimiento transitotio definidas por Theis y adaptadas por De Gelis. Estas mediciones consisten en inyectar en un piezometro BrNH4 marcado con 82Br y determinar el tiempo que tarda la actividad en llegar a un pozo vecino. Los resultados obtenidos son muy interesantes por cuanto proporcionan datos sobre la distribucion de las velocidades en una formacion aluvial y contribuyen, con los medios de deteccion corrientes, a comprobar la ley de Theis en condiciones muy distintas de las que emplea como base la hipotesis. La memoria trata tambien de la marcacion del agua por medio de 82Br para localizar estratos o uniones permeables en una formacion geologica margocalcarea que habra de soportar los diques de una darsena en un puerto de mar. Despues de inyectarlo en la formacion mediante agua inactiva, el indicador se extrae por bombeo y se efectuan mediciones de actividad locales y globales que permiten calcular la fraccion recuperada y localizar con precision las zones de retitucion. Los indicadores radiactivos constituyen en ambos casos el unico medio de que se dispone actualmente para resolver problemas de la indole senalada. (author)Abstract (Russian)
Izmerenie skorosti pereme- shcheniya sloev allyuviya imeet ogromnoe znachenie dlya opredeleniya naibolee vazhnykh parametrov v oblasti podzemkoj gidrodinamiki. Daetsya opisanie primeneniya radioaktivnykh indikatorov pri izmereniyakh skorostej dvizheniya vody vodonosnogo plasta, uzhe izuchennykh s pomoshch'yu mekhanicheskikh metodov, osnovannykh na zakonakh perekhodnogo dvizheniya, opredelennykh Tsejsom i prinyatykh De Zhelisom. Izmereniya byli predprinyaty dlya togo, chtoby izuchit', posle vvedeniya v p'ezometr BrNH4, mechennogo bromom-82 , proyavlenie aktivnosti v sosednem kolodtse. Poluchennye rezul'taty pozvolyayut sdelat' interesnye utochneniya otnositel'no raspredeleniya skorostej v nanosnom obrazovanii i sodejstvuyut, pri ispol'zovanii sushchestvuyushchikh metodov obnaruzheniya, proverke dejstvennosti zakona Tsejsa v usloviyakh, znachitel'no udalennykh ot uslovij osnovnykh gipotez. Drugoj upominaemyj metod primeneniya radioaktivnogo mecheniya vody s pomoshch'yu broma-82 otnositsya k lokalizatsii vodopronitsaemykh sloev i prosloek v serii geologicheskikh porod gornogo izvestnyaka, ispol'zuemogo dlya oblitsovkisten naberezhnoj v morskom portu. Indikator, popavshij pod dejstviem neaktivnoj vodi v obrazovanie, byl otkachen obratno; mestnye i obshchie izmereniya aktivnosti pozvolili ustanovit' osadok i bolee tochno lokalizovat ' zony vosstanovleniya. V oboikh sluchayakh ispol'zovanie radioaktivnykh indikatorov predstavlyalo soboj edinstvennyj imeyushchijsya v nastoyashchee vremya v rasporyazhenii put' resheniya postavlennykh problem.
