Description

The crystal and magnetic structures of the intermetallic compounds of the type Th(Msub(1-x)M'sub(x))5 with M,M' = Fe, Co or Ni are discussed based on neutron diffraction experiments. As a function of x for Th(Fe, Co)5 and Th(Fe, Ni)5 ferro and antiferromagnetic components show up, while for Th(Co, Ni)5, for x above about 0.2, the ferromagnetic order changes to a ferrimagnetic order and the cell constants show a marked discontinuity. Different interpretations of these phenomena are discussed. Finally the magnetic properties of different ThFe compounds are discussed
