It's a time for courage

Mining has always been an industry that demands courage both physical and entrepreneurial. That business courage will be needed as much as ever by the South African mining industry in 1982. The spectacular surge of 1978-80 ran into a considerable setback in 1981 and now this year faces some very difficult times. Mining has to take the long view. New projects have often to be started with a five-seven-or 10-year gestation period. Present metal and mineral prices can offer little meaningful guidance in these circumstances. This means that the vast capital expansion planned by the industry over the next few years will still largely go ahead.
