Ion-beam-induced plastic deformation: a universal phenomenon in glasses

Description

Ion-beam-induced plastic deformation (IBID) occurs in insulation glasses, amorphous semiconductors, and glassy metals. Like familiar plastic deformation, IBID manifests itself in large anisotropic dimensional changes during ion bombardment of thin self-supporting samples. The deformation rate and incubation fluence has been measured for some amorphous materials irradiated below 150K with 360MeV Xe ions. The development of a theoretical model for the phenomenom is discussed. (author)
