Transparency: the path to 'clearly better' sustainability and performance

It is not surprising that there is rising pressure on the oil and gas sector for increased transparency from regulators, investors, NGOs and the media. Faced with demands for more information about their activities, both from internal and eternal actors, a number of energy companies have been pro-active in staking out the transparency issue as one where they have decided to lead. Many of these companies have decided to use the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) framework for assessing and reporting on their economic, social and environmental performance, an initiative specifically commended by the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development. Governments might also wish to consider the benefits of using the GRI framework for their own activities
