Investigation of the 3He wave function by quasielastic scattering

Creators

Description

The CE25 experiment, recently completed at the IUCF cooler ring, measured the beam and target analyzing powers and the spin correlation parameter in 3He(p, 2p) and 3He(p, pn) quasielastic scattering. Polarized protons with incident energies of 200, 300 and 415 MeV were scattered from an metastability-exchange optically pumped polarized 3He internal target. Quasielastic reactions are expected to be sensitive to the polarization of the nucleons in 3He. The results provide tests of Faddeev-based calculations, which indicate that the polarization of the 3He nucleus is carried predominantly by the neutron. The experiment included detection of the quasielastic reactions and of the 3He(p, p3He) and 3He(p, π+α) reactions for polarization and luminosity monitoring. The experimental technique and results of the analysis will be presented
