Analytical evaluation of threshold between string and zig-zag modes in crystalline ion beam

Description

The author analytically derives the parameter characterizing the transition from string to zig-zag for a crystalline ion beam. Calculation shows that one obtains the same value as through molecular dynamics simulations. The reason for the occurance of the transition is also discussed
