The Canadian sludge irradiator project: unexpected challenges and opportunities
Description
Since 1991, Nordion International has been seeking approval of a proposal to treat municipal sewage sludge using a cobalt 60 sourced tote box irradiator, at a Sludge Recycling Facility. The two-year approval process followed the expected path of reviews by technical and financial experts, processing field trials, market studies and political deliberations. The result was a number of unexpected challenges, and even opportunities. This paper discusses some of these unexpected aspects of the project. (author)
