General features of design for unit No. 2 of Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station

The Unit No.2 of Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station of Tokyo Electric Power Co. is a 1,100-MWe BWR-5 power plant furnished by Toshiba under the guidance of Tokyo Electric Power Co.. The unit is scheduled to have its construction started coming November and to be put into commercial operation in October 1990. It incorporates various design features through the achievements of Toshiba's novel technological developments, home technology and cost improvements on the basis of the rich experience accumulated in the design, construction and operation of 500-, 800- and 1,100-MWe-class BWR plants. Description is made here of the general features at the preconstruction phase of the Unit No. 2, which is considered as the maturation of BWR plants in Japan. (author)
