Experimental study on the adiabatic shear bands
Description
Four martensitic steels (Z50CDV5 steel, 28CND8 steel, 35NCDV16 steel and 4340 steel) with different hardness between 190 and 600 Hsub(B) (Brinell hardness), have been studied by means of dynamic compressive tests on split Hopkinson pressure bar. Microscopic observations show that the fracture are associated to the development of adiabatic shear bands (except 4340 steel with 190 Hsub(B) hardness). By means of tests for which the deformation is stopped at predetermined levels, the measurement of shear and hardness inside the band and the matrix indicates the chronology of this phenomenon: first the localization of shear, followed by the formation of adiabatic shear band and ultimatly crack initiation and propagation. These results correlated with few simulations by finite elements have permitted to suggest two mecanisms of deformation leading to the formation of adiabatic shear bands in this specific test

Quatre aciers martensitiques (Z50CDV5, 28CND8, 35NCDV16 et AISI 4340) presentant des duretes s'echelonnant de 190 a 600 Brinell ont ete etudies en compression dynamique sur barre d'Hopkinson. Les observations microscopiques ont montre qu'a partir d'une durete de l'ordre de 300 Brinell, les ruptures etaient associees au developpement de bandes de cisaillement adiabatique. Apres essais interrompus a differents niveaux de deformation, la mesure du cisaillement et de la durete dans les bandes et dans la matrice a apporte des precisions sur la chronologie d'apparition des phenomenes intervenant lors de la deformation: localisation du cisaillement, cisaillement adiabatique et rupture. Ces resultats, completes par quelques simulations par elements finis, ont permis de proposer deux mecanismes de deformation conduisant a la formation des bandes de cisaillement adiabatique dans ce type d'essaiFiles
