Cerebral blood flow tomography by single photon emission computerized tomography using /sup 133/Xe in cerebrovascular disease

Description

Conventional single photon (gamma) emitting radioisotopes can be used to image regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) tomographically in man. The radioactive nucleide of xenon having an atomic weight of 133 daltons is quite widely used, because at the level of resolution studied, it distributes solely according to blood flow and solubility. This paper summarizes the technique of /sup 133/Xe tomography for DBF measurement with emphasis on the results obtained in patients with acute stroke. The approach is compared to other techniques for DBF tomography emphasizing practical aspects as patient acceptability, repeatability and costs, aspects that are important for wider usage both in clinical research and in routine clinical application to patients with cerebrovascular disease
