Nb(IV) in alkali-phosphate glasses

  • 1. A.N. Nesmeyanov Institute of Elementoorganic Compounds, Moscow

Description

This paper investigates the alkali-phosphate glasses M2O-P2O5-Nb2O5 (M2O = Na2O, K2O, and Li2O) over a wide range of niobium oxide concentrations. It was established that after gamma-irradiation at 77 K, for all the glasses, an intense doublet appears which is characteristic of the PO2-4 anion-radical. There is no anisotropic splitting of the components in the ESR spectrum obtained from the heat produced in paramagnetic centers (PMC). In addition to the PMC described which belongs to the Nb (IV) ion an additional PMC appears for Nb2O5 concentrations above 20 mole %
