Thermo-mechanical stability of directionally solidified Al2O3-ZrO2(Y2O3) eutectic fibers

Description

Fiber-reinforced intermetallic and ceramic matrix composites are promising materials for high temperature structural applications in oxidizing environments. The limitations of c-axis single crystal Al2O3 fiber have led to the development of alternative single crystal oxide fibers such as MgAl2O4, YAG and oxide/oxide eutectic fibers, such as Al2O3/ZrO2(Y2O3) and Y3Al5O12/Al2O3 eutectic fiber. The directionally solidified oxide-oxide eutectic fiber offers an attractive combination of mechanical property and chemical stability and, therefore, it has a promising potential for a variety of high temperature structural applications in oxidizing environment
