Carotenoid synthesis in a suspension culture of carrot cells

  • 1. Toyama Univ. (Japan). Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences

Description

Biosynthesis of carotenoid in cultured carrot cells was studied in relation to cell growth and acetate metabolism. Of the two strains tested, one (GD-1) predominantly produces β-carotene and the other (GD-2) lycopene. In both strains, carotenoid was produced in parallel with cell growth. Incorporations of acetate-14C into carotenoids, organic acids and amino acids were accelerated by increasing the concentration of 2,4-D in the medium.
