Enhancing the inherent safety of fast reactor by removing upper axial blanket

  • 1. Reactor Neutronic Division, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam - 603 102 (India)

Description

There has been continuous attempt in the nuclear community to enhance negative reactivity feedbacks in the reactor core to ensure the reactor safety. As the higher magnitude of power coefficient does not necessarily ensure safe shutdown in all accidents, effort were made to find out the methodologies to enhance the reactor safety which will be effective in Unprotected Loss of Flow (ULOF), which is a bounded by automatic shutdown case. Inherent safety is the capability of the reactor system to preclude hypothetical core disruptive accidents without requiring manual engineering shutdown or operator intervention to keep the reactor in safe conditions
