Localization and handling of failed fuel subassemblies in sodium-cooled fast breeder reactors

Description
Fuel pin failures cannot be completely excluded, and must therfore be taken into consideration in the design of future breeder reactors. The most important design objective is the limitation of the radiological and operational consequences of pin failures. This requires rapid and reliable detection and localization of failed subassemblies as well as their safe handling and storage. The experience with equipment for localizing (cover gas activity, delayed neutron defection = DND, sipping) and handling failed subassemblies gained from the operation of West European experimental and prototype reactors shows that these requirements can be met. Abstract (German)
Brennstabdefekte koennen nicht voellig ausgeschlossen werden und sind daher auch bei der Auslegung zukuenftiger Brutreaktoren zu beruecksichtigen. Wesentlichstes Auslegungsziel ist die Begrenzung der radiologischen und betrieblichen Folgen von Stabschaeden. Dies erfordert die schnelle und zuverlaessige Detektion und Lokalisierung von Defektelementen (Schutzgasaktivitaet, Nachweis verzoegerter Neutronen, Sipping), sowie deren sichere Handhabung und Lagerung. Die durch den Betrieb der westeuropaeischen Versuchs- und Prototypreaktoren gewonnenen Erfahrungen mit Einrichtungen zur Lokalisierung und Behandlung von Defektelementen zeigen, dass diese Anforderungen erfuellt werden koennen.
