Eastern Europeans - going their separate ways

With the disintegration of Comecon, problems that most of the east European countries now face include how to deal with spent fuel disposal, quality assurance for WER reactors, operating WER's and radioactive waste disposal. There is a division between those countries that either have something to export (and so have access to hard currency) or have indigenous technology to depend on, and those that do not. Public acceptance is another area where these countries hope to take advantage of western experience. The situation in a number of countries is reviewed. (author)
