Method for determination of 131I in surface water

Description
131I is used in nuclear medicine for thyroid therapy. After release from hospital the 131I remaining in the patient is excreted into the sewage and, with the cleared waste water, into the river. For the determination of low 131I concentrations in river water, a chemical extraction method is required. In the following we explain a method, which includes both the precipitation of inorganic and organic iodine. The method is based on the precipitation of inorganic bound iodine with bentonite and organic bound iodine with Fe3+ cations.
