Description

After one year of physics at LEP and ≅ 700k Z0 decays registered by its four experiments, no new particle nor new phenomenon has been unveiled. At the per cent level the Z0 is standard. Several potentially interesting channels have been explored to the 10-4 level or less without success. To conclude that there is nothing to discover at LEP would however be premature and rather short minded. Interesting modes can still appear with much smaller branching ratios: among many other possibilities a classical Higgs of ≅ 55 GeV or a manifestation of Z compositeness through its decay into 3 γ are not expected to show up before one reaches the 10-6 level or so. Moreover if a theory like the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model is a reality one has a good chance to discover something at LEP I + LEP 200 since such a theory absolutely needs a scalar particle, at least, below or not far above the Z mass.
