Development of micro-computer-controlled automatic measurement and analysis system for emulsion chamber

Description

For the purpose of efficient measurement and analysis of large quantity of showers by the large area exposure of emulsion chambers, a micro-computer-controlled automatic measurement and analysis system has been developed by connecting a photometer and an X-Y recorder to a micro-computer. In this system, the processes of the measurement of emulsion density D for every shower with a photometer and the determination of D (max) and the depth Δt by plotting the D-values on section paper were automated among conventional measuring processes. The program for the system is composed of the items shown below: all the transition curves determined for respective energy and m are memorized in a micro-computer by substituting them with several approximate curves whose parameters are designated; an approximate curve closest to the maximum measured value is called out after reading the measured values over all the layers of a shower; the optimal curve is determined by the least squares method so that the called out approximate curve best fits the measured values; and a graph of this optimal curve is drawn on the printer with the measured values after determining D (max) and Δt from the optimal curve. In consideration of the result compared with the conventional method, if the optimal curve just fits the measured values or if the dispersion of the measured values in relation to the optimal curve is small, the result obtained can be adopted as the appropriate value.
