A simple routine for testing and evaluation of the system functional characteristics for gamma spectrometry

Gamma spectrometers are instruments widely used in many branches of nuclear technology. Being equipments of high sophistication, they show certain operational characteristics which must be known by their users. A simple methodology to evaluate these characteristics was developed and successfully applied to NaI (T1) and (HP)Ge spectrometers. Basically, the procedure consisted of fitting a Gaussian curve to each photopeak, taking its characteristics (FWHM, area, etc.) as the characteristics of the photopeak respective. The stability, linearity of response, energy resolution an peak efficiency for each system were studied. Gamma standards in the energy range of 60-1275 KeV were employed, and each characteristic was studied for several operation voltages. The results showed that both systems were working properly. The methodology proposed herein, though simple, was truly effective, and can be used without any restrictions for testing similar equipments. (Author)

Os sistemas de espectrometria gama sao instrumentos de larga aplicacao em varios campos da tecnologia nuclear. Sendo sistemas de alta sofisticacao, eles apresentam certas caracteristicas operacionais que devem ser conhecidas de seus usuarios. Uma metodologia simples para avaliacao dessas caracterisitcas foi desenvolvida e aplicada com exito a espectrometros de NaI(T1) e (HP)Ge. Basicamente, o procedimento consistia em ajustar uma gaussiana a cada fotopico, tomando-se as caracteristicas da gaussiana (FWHM, area, etc.) como as do fotopico correspondente. Foram assim estudadas a estabilidade, a linearidade, a resolucao em energia e a eficiencia de pico. Padroes de emissores gama de 60 a 1275 KeV foram empregados, a cada uma das caracterisitcas foi estudada para varias tensoes de operacao. Os resultados indicaram que os sistemas operavam normalmente. A metodologia proposta, conquanto simples, mostrou-se efetiva, podendo ser usada sem restricoes em testes de equipamentos similares. (Autor)Additional details
