Electron-beam-driven high-power hydrogen fluoride lasers

Description

A laser that produces a 4.2 kJ pulse is briefly described. Pulse widths for the laser ranged from 20 to 30 ns: peak power was about 200-billion W. The 4.2-kJ pulse is nearly double the previous record pulse for an HF laser, also an electron-beam-driven system located at Sandia. The HF pulse was produced by injecting an intense beam of electrons from the REBA accelerator into a 2.3-m-long, 15-cm-dia tube filled with hydrogen, fluorine, sulfur-hexafluorine, and oxygen at pressures up to two atmospheres. A 3-kG magnetic field guided the electron beam along the axis of the gas-filled cell. REBA delivers a 50 kA beam of 2-MeV electrons in a 70 ns-wide pulse. (U.S.)
