Lifetime measurements of high-spin states in /sup 166/Yb

  • 1. Nuclear Science Division, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley, California 94720

Description

The Doppler-shift attenuation method was used to measure lifetimes of yrast states in /sup 166/Yb. Values of tau range from 0.16(2) ps at 24+ to 0.05(1) ps at 34+. The B(E2) values decrease from 240 to 120 single-particle units in this spin range, indicating a loss of collectivity which likely reflects a change of the nucleus towards triaxial shape. The side-feeding times are consistent with rotational cascades having moments of inertia 25% larger than the yrast sequence or B(E2) values around 60 single-particle units
