Analysis of Carbon-14 on reef coral by liquid scintillation counter (LSC)

Description
The purpose of this investigation was to estimate the age of reef coral that determined by carbon dating technique using of liquid scintillation Counter (LSC). This investigation was preceded by sample preparation, chemical and physical cleaning, pretreatment, CO2 absorption. Sample measurement was performed by LSC after addition of liquid scintillator at the Radiation Chemistry Laboratory of Hasanuddin University. The result showed that the age of the coral is 4673 years old. Measurement of sample from the same batch which was performed at the Centre for Radiation Research in Poznan, Poland, resulted a relatively same age (4505). Based on the above-mentioned results, it can be concluded that the quality of measurement performed at the Radiation Chemistry Laboratory of Hasanuddin University is closely similar to the quality of measurement at the Centre for Radiation Research, Poznan, Poland.
