Natural convection in sealed boxes

Description

Experimental results on natural convection in a confined atmosphere are given. A practical application of this study is the heat dissipation problem in electronic racks. A quantitative determination of the necessary geometrical dimensions of metallic containers enclosing heat sources was sought. The results of a number of experiments with cubic containers, exhibiting three types of heat transfer (conduction, intermediate case with connected thermal layers and natural convection in separated layers) led to the development of parallelepipedic shapes. Abstract (French)

Ce rapport rend compte de resultats experimentaux obtenus sur la convection naturelle en atmosphere confinee. Il a pour objectif pratique la possibilite de predeterminer quantitativement avec une bonne approximation, les dimensions geometriques d'enveloppes metalliques enfermant des sources dissipatrices de calories. Ce probleme est intimement lie a la conception mecanique des appareils electroniques etanches. Partant d'une serie d'experiences sur des coffrets cubiques mettant en evidence trois regimes d'ecoulement calorifique (conduction, regime intermediaire a couches limites jointives, convection naturelle a couches limites separees), des extrapolations sont faites a des formes parallelepipediques avec verifications experimentales. De par la presence d'une seule source dissipatrice ce rapport constitue un premier stade de l'etude des ecoulements calorifiques dans les racks electroniques. (auteurs)
