Description

India has limited uranium but vast thorium resources. The long term nuclear power programme would therefore depend on effective introduction of 232Th-233U fuel cycle in PHWR which is the backbone of India's nuclear power programme. An R and D project covering fabrication of ThO2-UO2 and ThO2PuO2 fuels by powder-pellet and Sol-Gel Microsphere Pelletisation (SGMP) routes, thermophysical property evaluation of these materials and irradiation testing in the pressurised water loop of CIRUS is underway for the last 5 years. The present paper summarises the progress of this project at Radiometallurgy Division, BARC. (author). 6 refs., 8 figs
