Calculation of CO2 emission factor for coal power plant and nuclear power plant

  • 1. Pusat Pengembangan Energi Nuklir – BATAN, Jakarta (Indonesia)

Description

Climate change is a global phenomenon that caused by human activity that use fossil fuel to support industry activity and electricity generation. That activity is the main source of green house gas (GHG) emission, especial y CO2 emission. Using power plant which has low CO2 emission factor is the solution to reduce CO2 emission. The objective of the study is to calculate CO2 emission factor of coal power plant (CPP) and nuclear power plant (NPP). With the emission factor, the value of CO2 emission can be calculated easily. The methodology are collected and processed data, calculated emission factor, analysis and comparison emission factor, conclusion. CPP that had been use are Banten CPP, Indramayu CPP, and Rembang CPP. NPP that had been use is NPP 1,000 MWe. Based on the calculation, CO2 emission factor each power plant is Banten CPP 1,033 kg/kWh, Indramayu CPP 1,002 kg/kWh, Rembang CPP 1,136 kg/kWh and NPP 1,000 MWe 0 kg/kWh. The average CO2 emission factor of three CPP is 1.05 kg/kWh. Electricity generation in the value 1,700 Mwyr using the three CPP make 16 thousand kTon of CO2 emission. If that generation replace by 2 unit NPP 1,000 MWe, will reduce CO2 emission 16 thousand kTon. (author)
