An investigation of fine structure of the bursts produced by muons in the rock

  • 1. Osaka City Univ. (Japan). Dept. of Physics

Description

Two dimensional lateral structures of the shower particles in the bursts, produced by high energy muons in the rock, have been studied by using the four layers of proportional counters. The mean lateral distributions measured fit well to those of Monte Carlo simulation of electromagnetic cascade showers. The distributions of reduced chi2 which correspond to the fluctuations of each lateral distribution from the mean value show that the rates of the events giving high chi2 for the data are somewhat greater than those expected from the simulation. The rates of these excesses to the total events are about 10% in the burst size range 578 - 8277 particles which are induced by the muons in the energy range 714 - 9900 GeV. These excesses could be explained by the contributions from the muon nuclear interactions in the rock
