Ultraviolet light in therapy

The author discusses how both UVB-phototherapy and PUVA may have long-term side effects. They are known photocarcinogens and presumably add to chronic actinic skin damage. Although there are several differences of UVB and PUVA in the effects of cells and subcellular structures, the potential hazard of long-term use may be similar. This, however, cannot be assessed at present and only prolonged follow-up of the patients currently treated will answer these questions.
