Nitriding of precipitation hardened stainless steels

Description

Gas nitriding process has been applied to precipitation hardened stainless steel 17-4PH. Hydrogen chloride as a result of ammonia chloride dissociation was added to nitriding atmosphere for the steel surface activation. The achieved layers had high hardness and low brittleness. The hardness and thickness of the layer are depended on nitriding temperature. The optimum temperature range for thermo-chemical treatment was established. Influence of the precipitation process taking place during heat treatment on the proceeding of nitriding process and structure and properties of layers was proofed. (author)
