Spleen segmentation in MRI images

Description

Due to the complicity and variability of abdominal anatomy to segment the spleen is a challenging problem. The radiologists have different techniques for image diagnostic of the diseases and pathology of this specific human organ. Magnet Resonance Imaging (MRI) is widely used to visualize detailed internal structure and limited function of the body. The contrast by MRI between the different soft tissues of the body is much greater than those by computer tomography (CT). That is way it is a good choice by examination of the spleen. The analysis of the medical images is still not an easy task and is often time consuming. A decision of this problem is the developing of computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) tools for medical images. Semi-automated approach for segmentation of the human spleen in this paper is proposed. The approach is based on an active contour method and tangibly improves the extraction of the spleen from images made by MRI. Key words: Spleen Segmentation. MRI. Active Contour Methods
