DNA repair after neutron and gamma irradiation

Description
Because of the importance of repair processes in radiation therapy we investigated DNA repair after neutron and 60Co gamma irradiation. Unscheduled DNA synthesis was measured in spleen cells and peripheral lymphocytes by autoradiography and the rejoining of DNA strand breaks by alkaline and neutral sucrose gradient centrifugation. Up to doses of 30 krad neutrons, unscheduled DNA synthesis could be demonstrated while strand rejoining occured up to doses of 15 krad. Besides investigating DNA repair, semiconservative DNA synthesis was measured after various irradiation doses, the amount of suppression exhibiting good correlation with radiation dose
