Garitta project: An example of conditioning of large dimensions irradiated components

  • 1. CISE, Milan (Italy)
  • 2. ENEL, Rome (Italy)

Description

Owing to reactivity problems, the start-up of the G.E. BWR Garigliano ENEL Power Plant was performed by means of stainless steel fuel shrouds. When the reactivity reached the expected values, the steel shrouds were taken away and substituted with those of zirconium. The stainless steel shrouds were first flattened and then put into a small pit, called F.A.T., built in the controlled area. During operation of the Plant some other large and small components were added to this first load. The ENEL program expects to obtain a ''SAFE STORAGE'' condition in the whole area. This SAFE STORAGE condition also involves the conditioning of the above mentioned F.A.T. ENEL, under the Italian Decommissioning Program, has appointed CISE to study and develop a conditioning project aimed at isolating, in a safe way, all contaminated and activated materials in the F.A.T. (including the pool liner). The whole waste management system deals with the realization of a new double-walled pool, linked to the old one, in order to get a water level elevation of about three meters above the grade and to carry out the sludge separation from the water
