Determination of technetium-99 in environmental samples by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry
- 1. Environmental Protection Section, Health and Safety Div., Tokai Works, Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corp., Ibaraki (Japan)
Description
A new analytical technique using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) was applied to the determination of technetium-99 (99Tc) in environmental samples. The determination method of 99Tc consists of cyclohexanone solvent extraction to eliminate the interfering element (Ru) before the ICP-MS measurements are made. Technetium-95m is used as the chemical recovery tracer. Compared with conventional methods, the method sensitivity is 10 to 100 times higher and the counting time is 300 to 10,000 times shorter.
