Contaminated Site Monitoring. Integrated real-time supervision for old coking-plant site

The purpose of the Contaminated Site Monitoring (CSM) is to develop a real time management methodology for PAH (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) contaminated aquifer resulting from the coal activity. For the full-scale experimentation, an old coking plant site has been was instrumented (sensors, analysers, data-logger, programmable logic controller, etc.) in June 2000. Its follow-up currently continues with remote supervision, via telecom connection. It is the first time that a CSM is installed for a real time supervision of the natural evolution of PAH pollution in the soil. Because of low propagation velocities, one is generally satisfied with selective investigations, in fact incomplete and non-representative of the real. On the other hand, Environmental Monitoring is widely used for many applications with faster evolution (free water and atmospheric pollution).CSM allows the estimation of the natural biodegradation activity deduced from measurements of biogas in unsaturated area. A strong activity has been observed in hot period (consumption of oxygen and emission of carbon dioxide) and a low one in winter. For the daily rate PAH analysis of aquifer water, a field UV-fluorometer is used. Calibrated every 15 days with naphthalene (the most soluble PAH), the water fluorescence is equivalent to a concentration of naphthalene but a post-treatment of data is necessary in order to correct the drift of the analyser between calibrations. Subsequently the measured and treated data are restituted/exploited on a numerical support carried out by an interconnection between a GIS (Geographic Information System), a Database and a mass transport model (finite element package FeflowC). The methodology tends to be integrated within a convivial and ergonomic restitution of the whole results on a unique support for decision making support. The polluted site managers can thus visualise any aspect of the information and identify the relevant indicators, which can then be compared with weather data and/or complementary simulation results of diffuse pollution plume at different time scale. Le Monitoring Continu de Site Pollue (MCSP), developpe au cours de ce travail, a pour but la mise au point d'un outil de gestion en temps reel et a distance de l'evolution d'une pollution HAP (Hydrocarbures Aromatiques Polycycliques) dans un aquifere superficiel issu de l'activite charbonniere. Pour l'experimentation en vraie grandeur, une ancienne friche de cokerie a ete instrumentee (capteurs, analyseurs, central d'acquisition, automate, etc..) en juin 2000. Son suivi est assure par un pilotage a distance via une connexion telecom. Le Monitoring Continu de Site Pollue est une necessite pour le controle de l'evolution des pollutions et donc des risques induits sur l'homme et l'environnement. En raison des faibles vitesses de propagation d'une contamination aux HAP, on se satisfaisait generalement d'investigations ponctuelles en fait incompletes et non representatives de la realite et masquant certains aspects particulierement interessants comme l'activite de biodegradation. Le suivi continu en temps reel de l'evolution naturelle d'une pollution HAP dans l'aquifere superficiel ou les sols avec une confrontation avec l'evolution des parametres generaux (meteo, pluies, etc..) n'a jamais ete conduit. Ce MCSP experimental permet de mettre en evidence des correlations entre l'evolution de la pollution et les conditions meteorologiques. Pour l'activite de biodegradation naturelle deduite des mesures de biogaz en zone non saturee, une forte activite a ete observee les saisons chaudes (consommation d'oxygene et degagement de dioxyde de carbone) et une nette diminution en hiver. Pour l'analyse quotidienne des HAP dans les eaux de l'aquifere, un fluorimetre UV de terrain est utilise. Calibre avec du naphtalene (HAP le plus soluble), la fluorescence des eaux est donnee en μg/L equivalent naphtalene, mais necessite un postraitement afin de corriger la derive de l'analyseur entre deux calibrations. Par la suite, les donnees mesurees et traitees sont restituees et exploitees au moyen d'un outil integre, constitue d'un SIG (Systeme d'Information Geographique), interconnecte a une base de donnees et a un modele de transport de polluant. Les resultats sont presentes sur un synoptique convivial et ergonomique servant de support d'aide a la decision. Les gestionnaires de sites pollues peuvent ainsi visualiser toutes les informations enregistrees sur l'evolution de la pollution et donc facilement identifier les indicateurs pertinents a confronter aux parametres generaux (meteo, etc..) ou aux differents scenarii de simulation de transport de polluants.
