Cross section for fast-neutron fission of 245Cm and angular distribution of fragments

  • 1. I.V. Kurchatov Inst. of Atomic Energy, Moscow (USSR)

Description

The fission cross section and the angular distribution of the fragments have been measured in the fission of 245Cm by monoenergetic neutrons. The neutrons were produced with the help of an electrostatic accelerator. A track method was used to detect the fragments. The cross section for the neutron-induced fission of 245Cm is approximately 1.5 b over the energy interval 0.6-2 MeV and increased to 2.4 b at 0.2 MeV. At 5 MeV it has a value of 1.7 b. It goes through a rounded maximum at 1.7 MeV. The angular anisotropy of the fragments is less than 10% at these energies, with predominant production at an angle of 0 degree
