Early and late effects of radiation on hematopoietic stem cells
Creators
Description
The CFU-s model is one of the few in vivo systems that permits unambiguous evaluation of radiation responses in stem cells under normal steady state conditions. We have used the CFU-S system to: (1) study radiosensitivity to heavy charged particles and relationships between RBE and linear energy transfer (LET); (2) test the hypothesis that damage to stromal tissues is of paramount importance in explaining late-life reductions in the CFU-S population; and (3) explore age-related changes in radiosensitivity of CFU-S and the repair capacity of the cells
