The brain

The neurocranium encloses and protects the brain and its meninges, blood supply, cranial nerves, and cerebrospinal fluid. Radiographically, these structures normally cannot be visualized or individually identified because of their similar tissue densities. Some gross abnormalities of the brain can be suspected in plain radiographs by the presence of abnormal densities within the cranial cavity and secondary changes affecting the overlying calvaria, but other major brain defects may have no associated cranial deformities. Nonetheless, all skull radiographs must be carefully examined to detect possible clues of underlying cerebral pathology
