Cleaning up Hanford: The environmental restoration project

This article describes the environmental restoration program on the Hanford Reservation responsible for dealing with contaminated soil and groundwater and with inactive nuclear facilities. Many signs of significant progress can be seen, including waste area identification along the Columbia River, volume estimates refined and excavation started. Numerous facilities in the 100 area are being decommissioned, and a demonstration of long-term interim safe storage for one of the surplus reactors is in progress.
