Small Modular Reactors - Information memo
Description
With the information available to IRSN, SMRs should be able to meet more demanding safety objectives than high power reactors in terms of radioactive release in normal and accident situations, including severe accidents, and for core melt frequency. About seventy SMR designs are being developed around the world, but the majority of them remain at the stage of a preliminary detailed project, few nuclear operators having expressed their intention to acquire these types of reactor. A smaller quantity of radioactive material, the possible use of a wider choice of design options, the possible simplification of the design to meet the safety requirements in force and the enhancement of inherent safety characteristics are all features that can be used by designers. However, the implementation of innovative systems is an aspect not to be neglected, and the expectations of the safety authorities in terms of demonstration will require the use of experimental platforms. The factory production of all or part of the reactor modules should make it possible to ensure an increased quality of manufacturing, compared to a more traditional method of construction. Nevertheless, the characteristics of the designs will have to be examined in detail in order to be able to position oneself further on the actual level of safety that can be achieved by these types of reactor
Abstract (French)
Au vu des elements disponibles a l'IRSN, il apparait que les SMR devraient pouvoir respecter des objectifs de surete plus exigeants que les reacteurs de forte puissance en termes de limitation des rejets en situation normale et accidentelle, y compris d'accident grave, et de frequence de fusion du coeur. Pres de 70 concepts de SMR sont developpes de par le monde, mais la majorite d'entre eux reste au stade d'un avant-projet detaille, peu d'exploitants nucleaires ayant manifeste leur intention de se doter de ce type de reacteurs. Une quantite de matieres radioactives moindre, le recours possible a un choix elargi d'options de conception, la simplification possible de la conception pour repondre aux exigences de surete en vigueur et la valorisation de caracteristiques de surete inherentes sont autant de caracteristiques qui peuvent etre exploitees par les concepteurs. De ce point de vue, les principes de conception retenus a ce stade pour le projet Nuward apparaissent interessants. La mise en oeuvre de systemes innovants represente toutefois un aspect a ne pas negliger et les attentes des autorites de surete en matiere de demonstration necessiteront de recourir a des plateformes experimentales. La fabrication de tout ou partie des modules de reacteur en usine devrait permettre de garantir une qualite de realisation accrue par rapport a un mode de construction plus traditionnel. Pour autant, les caracteristiques des concepts doivent etre examines en detail afin de pouvoir se positionner plus avant sur le niveau de surete qui peut etre atteint par ce type de reacteur
