Plutonium binding in the gonads of the hamster

Description
The distribution of plutonium 241 within hamster gonads was studied in relation to the presence of potential plutonium-binding sites. Chondroitinsulphate or similar molecules were identified as being responsible for the initial binding in the ovary. The reason why atritic follicles concentrate plutonium is not known but may be related to changes in the vascularisation of the follicles at the onset of follicle regression. (U.K.)
