Measurement of helicities and electric fields in whistler waves

Description

Pulsed currents are excited with electrodes in a large magnetoplasma in the regime of electron MHD. The currents are transported by whistler wave packets whose magnetic fields have been measured in 3 D space and time. The field topology is that of propagating vortices which exhibit linkage, knotting, and twisting. The transport of helicities of B = ∇ x A and μo J ∇ x B is studied. From fluid and Maxwell equations, the electric field is obtained and resolved into inductive and space charge components. The latter dominates for oblique low-frequency whistlers.
